Exploring How to Get to the Airport at Krabi – Thailand

If you’re planning a trip to the stunning province of Krabi, there is a high chance that you will pass through the airport at Krabi.

There are three ways to get to the Krabi International Airport from every major city and island in Thailand. You can fly directly into the airport, or arrive by shuttle bus (songthawe), private taxi, or possibly you will drive yourself to the airport.

Here is everything you need to know about this small airport, how to get there, and what to expect when you arrive.

Where is Krabi Airport?

Krabi Airport is a public airport located about 7 kilometers east of the city center (Krabi Town). It’s conveniently situated to serve as a gateway to popular destinations like Ao Nang, Railay Beach, and Koh Lanta. The Krabi Airport Code is KBV.

  • Website: Krabi Airport
  • Krabi airport IATA code: KBV
  • Coordinates: 08°06’03″N, 98°59’05″E
  • Runway length 3,002 meters

Krabi Airport is conveniently located on the main highway – Route 4. The international terminal officially opened in 2006. The 4-story terminal can accommodate 600 arrivals and 600 departing passengers. Some of the major airlines include Air Asia, Thai Airways, and Bangkok Airways.

On this map, you can see where the airport in Krabi (#1) is located compared to Ao Nang (#2), and the Thara Park Pier (#3). These are two popular locations to catch ferries to many of the islands including Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui, and even Phuket.

Whether you’re heading to the bustling tourist spots or seeking a quieter retreat, Krabi Airport’s location makes it easy to start your adventure without any hassle.

3 Ways to Get to Krabi International

By Taxi or Private Transfer

One of the most convenient ways to get to the airport at Krabi is by taxi or private transfer. If you’re staying in Krabi Town or Ao Nang, you’ll find plenty of taxis ready to take you to the airport.

The journey from Ao Nang to the airport takes about 30-40 minutes, while from Krabi Town, it’s a quick 15-minute ride.

Private transfers can be booked in advance and often include perks like bottled water and Wi-Fi. Ask your accommodations to help you book a local driver. The one time I booked a private car, a party van arrived which had a gold interior and fun music!

I would suggest using this option to get to Krabi Airport. You may sit in traffic but it will be your fastest option if you do not have your own vehicle.

Two red buses on their way to the airport at krabi

By Shuttle Bus (Songthaew)

Little red shuttle buses run regularly from Ao Nang, Krabi Town, and even some of the surrounding areas.

The shuttle bus from Ao Nang takes around 40-50 minutes, while from Krabi Town, it’s approximately 20-25 minutes.

To hail one of these red vans, put your arm up and they will pull over. Have your destination written down (preferably in Thai) and show it to the driver. You will then get into the back of the bus and pay the driver once you get off the bus.

They usually do not shout out your stop so you need to use Google Maps to follow the route on your phone so you know when to get off.

By Rental Car

Several car rental companies operate from the airport in Krabi, offering a range of vehicles to suit your needs. I use DiscoverCars.com to book cars in Thailand. I have found it more reliable than booking directly through major companies.

Having a car allows you to explore the region at your own pace and easily reach the airport when it’s time to catch your flight. Just make sure you have an IDP (International Drivers permit). You can purchase one in advance at AAA.com.

You will be driving on the LEFT side of the road so if you are not familiar with this type of driving, I would suggest hiring a car to get you around Krabi Province.

Book Your Transportation in Advance

I use 12Go.com to book all of my Thailand transfers. They are reliable and I have never had an issue trying to redeem a ticket at the terminals or with drivers.

What to Expect at Krabi Airport

Facilities and Services

The airport at Krabi is small but well-equipped with all the essentials to make your journey smooth. You’ll find a range of facilities, including ATMs, currency exchange services, and free Wi-Fi.

If you need a bite to eat, a handful of small cafes offer both Thai and international cuisine. Shopping options include duty-free stores and souvenir shops, perfect for last-minute gifts.

Check-In and Security

Check-in at Krabi Airport is straightforward, with both self-service kiosks and traditional check-in counters available.

It’s always a good idea to arrive at least two hours before your flight, especially during peak travel seasons. Security is efficient but thorough, so be prepared to remove laptops and liquids from your carry-on bags.

Lounges and Relaxation

If you have some time before your flight, consider relaxing in one of the airport lounges. The Coral Executive Lounge offers complimentary snacks, drinks, and Wi-Fi but it is on the small side. This lounge was included in my Priority Pass during my last visit.

  • Coral Executive Lounge: Location: Domestic Terminal, Airside.
  • Bangkok Airways Boutique Lounge – Location: Domestic Terminal, Airside.
  • Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge – Location: Domestic Terminal, Landside.
