Here are 10 really fun things to do in Bangkok in 24 hours. If you are short on time, you can easily tackle 3-4 of these activities in less than a day.
Bangkok in 24 Hours
Bangkok is the heart of Southeast Asia. This gorgeous city is like a drum, beating out a song that brings tourists to it in droves. It has become one of the bucket list destinations for expats, digital nomads, and tourists from all over the world. And from the looks of it, you’re one of the lucky tourists who gets to spend a whole 24 hours in the jewel of Thailand.
But you’ve only got 24 hours. So the question is: what do you do with the time you’ve got?
Everybody’s different. Some people want to see the historical sites, of which the city has many, and some just want to find fun activities to do in Bangkok, Thailand.
Well, luckily for you, this list has a bit of all of that, and without further introduction, here are nine fun things to do in Bangkok when you have only 24 hours.
1. The Grand Palace
The Grand Palace is, well, grand. But it’s more than that, and it’s one of the tourist spots in Bangkok that you absolutely should not miss.
As it’s not the official residence of the royal family, the Grand Palace is open to tourists and provides people with a look at the stunning architecture, artifacts, and art that is housed here.
Just remember to plan: wear clothing that covers your legs and arrive as early as possible to avoid the crowds. If you can swing it, try to arrive by boat; it’s the most stylish and breathtaking way to arrive.
2. Wat Phra Kaew
Wat Phra Kaew, known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is located right next to the Grand Palace and is worth taking the time to explore. This is the royal family’s private chapel, and as such, you’re going to be expected to show a massive amount of respect. This means legs and shoulders are covered, as well as no photography inside the main temple.
But the complex houses more than just the temple. Some libraries are sometimes open to the public; the Royal Pantheon, a series of statutes that can be viewed only on the anniversary of the founding of the dynasty; and the Phra Si Rattana Chedi, where the ashes of the Buddha are reportedly held.
3. Wat Pho
Wat Pho, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha to tourists, is a massive temple complex that houses this famous statue as well as a variety of interesting architectural and sacred spaces.
Most people just saunter through to see the Reclining Buddha statue but don’t make that mistake. Take the time to look around and find a sense of peace in Wat Pho’s many gardens and tucked-away quiet spaces.
4. Chatuchak Weekend Market
If you’re lucky enough to be in Bangkok at the weekend, make sure to set aside time to head to the Chatuchak Weekend Market. This is one of the largest markets in Asia, housing over 15,000 different vendors, and you can find anything you could ever want or need here.
No seriously, everything you ever want is here, from clothes and jewelry to souvenirs and even electronics.
5. Watch a Movie in Bangkok
Watching a movie in Bangkok is a special treat. Luxury malls have movie theaters that will offer you a dinner and a movie, all for less than the cost of buying an actual ticket in America.
You also get free drinks and popcorn after your dinner to ensure you enjoy the rest of the movie.
6. Stroll Along Khao San Road
Khao San Road isn’t for everyone, particularly people who just want to relax, but it is worth mentioning.
This is considered the nightlife market for expats and tourists and is a road in Bangkok that can service your every need, from repairing your travel gear to giving you great street food at affordable prices.
Here is my guide on where to eat and drink on Khao San Road to avoid the crowds.
7. Siam Paragon Mall
If you’re in Bangkok and you want to do some luxury shopping, Siam Paragon Mall is just the place with six stories of every type of shop imaginable. And even if you’re not in the mood for shopping, you can also visit the mall’s aquarium. Yes, this mall has an aquarium.
8. Lumpini Park
When you’re ready to collect your thoughts, or you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, walk over to Lumpini Park. This is the city’s biggest park, and it’s found right in the heart of the city. Go for a walk, lounge on the green, or take a boat ride on the water and feel all your worries just disappear for a little while.
9. Grab A Drink At A Sky Bar
There are many sky bars in Bangkok, most of which are rooftop bars that offer amazing views of the city. A whirlwind trip to Bangkok isn’t complete until you experience one of their many trendy bars.
Places worth seeing for yourself include the Cielo Sky Bar & Restaurant. Known among locals as one of the best sky bars, it boasts a bright dome and an amazing 360 panoramic view of the capital, Bangkok. You can choose from an extensive list of cocktails and wine.
10. Go Cafe Hopping
No doubt you will want to do some shopping while in Bangkok. Don’t forget to take time in between shops to dine at a variety of Bangkok’s many cafes. Take, for example, the Once Cafe & Cuisine. The cafe is wall-to-wall pink and features indoor palm trees and plastic flamingos.
While you are there, brave the cafe’s Italian Soda Explosion. The drink is made up of blue sorbet and strawberry soda, topped with whipped cream and cotton candy.
Or get a little racy and go to the condom cafe! It’s a quirky and tasteful place to grab a bite while walking Bangkok in 24 hours.
While this isn’t an exhaustive list of things to see and do in Bangkok, it will give you a head start on planning your 24-hour itinerary. And there’s something for everyone here, from popular Bangkok tourist spots to fun activities to do in the city.
You’ll never have to leave city limits, although at some point you may want to come back and immerse yourself in this brilliant city.
