Just a few years ago buying tickets to Machu Picchu was somewhat of a hassle as the website barely worked so you needed to buy tickets through tour guides and third parties.
Now, the new Peruvian Ministry of Culture website may not be perfect but purchasing tickets is much smoother.
In this guide, I’ll show you everything you need to know about buying Machu Picchu tickets, as well as how to purchase bus tickets from Aguas Calientes.
Let’s visit Machu Pichhu!
Where Is Machu Picchu Located?
Machu Picchu sits high in the Peruvian Andes, about 7,970 feet (2,430 meters) above sea level. It’s located near the town of Aguas Calientes.
The most common way to get to Machu Picchu is by train from Cusco (or Ollantaytambo) to Aguas Calientes, and then taking a bus or hiking up to the entrance of the ruins.

Machu Picchu Tickets: How Much and How to Buy
Entry to Machu Picchu is limited each day, so it’s important to buy your tickets in advance. I purchased mine 6 months in advance.
The best way to buy your Machu Picchu tickets is through the official government website: tuboleto.cultura.pe.
If you have any issues with the website, try using a VPN to load the page. Use Google Translate to translate the entire page if needed.
General Entrance Ticket: This costs around $45 USD and gives you access to the main ruins and all 3 circuits.
You then have the option to add on visiting either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for an additional $10 USD. The entrance is about halfway through Circuit 3.
I did not add on this option but I did see people coming in and out and they had walking sticks so it is more of a hike than an easy walk.
Step-by-Step Guide to Purchase Entry Tickets:
- Go to the website and select your preferred date. You’ll see different options depending on what you want to experience: the main ruins, Huayna Picchu Mountain, or Machu Picchu Mountain.
- Fill in your personal details including your passport information, which is required to buy the tickets.
- Choose your entry time. There are hourly slots, so make sure you choose a time that works for your itinerary.
- Make your payment online. Once your payment is confirmed, you’ll receive your ticket via email. Print it out or save it on your phone to show at the entrance.
Can You Buy Machu Picchu Entry Tickets In Person?
The answer is technically yes, but almost impossible. Tickets sell out quickly, especially in peak season, so it’s highly recommended that you buy them online well in advance.
If you must buy them in person, there are offices in Cusco and Aguas Calientes where you can do so, but don’t count on same-day availability.
Buy Machu Picchu Entry Tickets in Advance
Use the official website to buy your tickets. You will save time and money even if you decide to go on a tour.
How Far in Advance Should You Buy Machu Picchu Entry Tickets?
Ideally, you should purchase your Machu Picchu entry tickets at least four-six months in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the busy season (June to August).
For tickets to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, aim to book even earlier, as these limited spots fill up fast.
Machu Picchu’s Hours of Operation
Machu Picchu is open every day of the year from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM. When choosing your entry time, keep in mind that morning tickets (especially 6:00 AM) are popular for those hoping to catch the sunrise.
Later entry times are perfect if you prefer fewer crowds. I purchased tickets for the 11 am entry to Machu Picchu and got in line for the bus at 9:30 am. The wait to get on the bus was about an hour, and then a 25-minute bus ride got me into the ruins right at 11 am.
Pro Tip for Machu Picchu:
Don’t forget your passport the day you visit the ruins! You need it to get onto the bus from Aguas Calientes as well as to enter Machu Picchu.
How to Buy Bus Tickets from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
Buses run from early morning, starting around 5:30 AM, and leave every 10-15 minutes.
The ride is short—about 20-30 minutes—but the winding road through the mountains offers spectacular views. If you get car sick, make sure to take motion sickness medicine.
You can purchase your tickets in person once you arrive in Aguas Calientes, at the bus ticket office located near the train station.
Here is the location as you will not find it listed on Google. Below are pictures of the exterior of the office.
Bus Tickets
You can buy your bus tickets the day before you need them, at the ticket office in Aguas Calientes.
The cost is about $24 USD for a round-trip Adult ticket and $12 USD for a child ticket and they take cash and credit card.
Do not try to buy tickets on the same day as they will sell out. Single-way tickets are also available if you’d like to hike one leg of the journey.
Wait Times for the Bus
In August I waited an hour to get on the bus, as well as an hour to get on the return bus.
Look for the signs the employee is holding with your Machu Pichu entry time ticket on it. They will only allow you to enter the line that matches your entry ticket time and no earlier.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu?
The weather at Machu Picchu varies depending on the time of year. I visited in August and the weather was perfect with no fog covering the ruins.
Dry Season (May to October): This is the best time to visit if you want clear skies and sunny days. The views are stunning but keep in mind it’s also the busiest season, so you’ll need to plan ahead.
Wet Season (November to April): Expect rain, especially in January and February. Fewer tourists visit during this time, and the landscape becomes lush and green. If you don’t mind the rain, this could be a great time to enjoy a quieter experience.
Aguas Calientes Accommodation Options:
- Hostel (Private Room Options): Supertramp Hostel
- Mid-Level Hotel: Escobedo’s Inn
- High-End Hotel: Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel
Machu Picchu Altitude and What to Expect
Machu Picchu is located at 7,970 feet above sea level, which is relatively low compared to nearby Cusco (11,152 feet).
While altitude sickness is less likely here than in Cusco, it’s still a good idea to take it easy and stay hydrated.
Unfortunately, when I visited I had a really bad head cold so the altitude sickness was magnified, I felt a little better while at the ruins as it is a lower elevation than Cusco but not much better. My full guide will help you manage it also.
Do You Need a Tour Guide to Visit Machu Picchu?
You don’t need a tour guide to visit Machu Picchu, but if you know nothing about the site, then one is recommnded. Guides can explain the incredible history, architecture, and cultural significance of the site, adding depth to each landmark and structure.
The path is easy to follow and it is impossible to get lost so for me, a guide is not necessary. There are also mobile apps that offer walking tours of Machu Picchu offered in different languages.
There is also no shade at Machu Picchu so unless you are ok with standing in the direct sun listening to the guides, then I would just visit the ruins on your own.
For those interested in a guide, you have a few options: you can book online in advance through reputable websites like GetYourGuide.com or book one when you arrive at the ruins.
There are plenty of licensed guides available for hire at the entrance of Machu Picchu itself. The guides will be waiting at the entrance and take cash only. A guide in August (the busy season) was about $20 USD, plus tip.
Final Tips for Buying Machu Picchu Tickets
Visiting Machu Picchu is a dream destination for many, and with a little planning, you can make your trip smooth and unforgettable.
By buying your entry and bus tickets in advance, you’ll avoid last-minute stress and ensure a hassle-free experience at one of the world’s most breathtaking historical sites. Remember to plan for the altitude, pack for the weather, and bring essentials like your passport and a printed ticket.
Whether you’re hiking, exploring the main ruins, or simply soaking in the views, Machu Picchu is worth every moment. Safe travels and happy exploring!
