Experience Peru Trains: The Best Way to Travel to Machu Picchu from Cusco

Machu Picchu was always on my bucket list of places to visit and I finally got to see the ruins this past summer!

One of the ways to get there is to take one of the two Peru trains from Cusco to the Machu Pichu train station in Aguas Calientes.

With two unique train operators, several class options, and beautiful scenery, taking the train is one of the best ways to reach Machu Picchu.

In this guide I will show you how to ride the Peru trains from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, so you can visit Machu Picchu.

Quick Facts About Getting to Machu Picchu from Cusco

There are several ways to visit Machu Picchu by train when you are coming from Cusco. However, keep in mind the train does not go directly to the ruins.

Most people assume that you take the train directly to Machu Picchu which is incorrect. The most common path is to arrive in Cusco, stay a few nights, take the train to Aguas Calientes, and then take a 25-minute bus ride to Machu Picchu. Learn how to ride the bus in my Machu Picchu Guide.

To avoid having a very long day, I suggest staying a night or two in Aguas Calientes, before taking the train back to Cusco. It is possible to take the train from Cusco and visit Machu Picchu on the same day however, be prepared for at least a 12-hour day.

Choosing Your Train: Inca Rail Train vs. Peru Rail

Peru has two main train companies that run from Cusco to Aguas Calientes: Inca Rail and Peru Rail.

Both trains offer a 3.5- 4.5 hour ride from Cusco to the Machu Picchu station which is located in Aguas Calientes. From the train station, you then queue for up to an hour to then ride a 25-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

I rode Peru Rail on my visit as they offered the Vistadome train during my visit, while the Inca Rail was a bit more expensive for the 360° Class at the time.

Which company you choose will depend on when you are traveling, which train station you want to travel to, and what type of experience you would like to have.

I have seen prices range from $50 USD all the way up to $500 USD. Go to each train’s website to see current pricing, as well as schedules.

You do not have to book round-trip tickets on the same train. Book the more expensive ride on the way to Aguas Calientes, and then pay for the budget tier on the way back. You can choose your own adventure!

Two Peru Trains to Choose From

Both Inca Rail and Peru Rail offer a unique cultural experience that’s not just about transport—it’s a taste of Peru’s rich heritage. Here is a breakdown of both Peru trains:

Peru Rail

Peru Rail provides an authentic Peruvian train experience with a range of classes for different budgets:

• Expedition Class: Budget-friendly with comfortable seats, large windows, and Andean music.
• Vistadome Class: Full panoramic windows, local food and drinks, traditional music, and even fashion shows!
• Hiram Bingham Class: Luxury class with gourmet meals, live music, and a bar.

Depending on your class, you can enjoy everything from musical performances to fashion shows of local designs on the Vistadome trains. They even offer a booklet explaining the natural beauty outside.

Inca Rail

The Inca Rail has a similar tiered service to Peru Rail, with plenty of charm and comfort to go around:

• The Voyager Class: An affordable option with large windows, reclining seats, and snacks.
• The 360° Class: Mid-tier with panoramic windows, local snacks, and Andean music.
• The First Class: Premium seating, a welcome cocktail, three-course meals, and an open-air observatory for stunning views.

All of the Andean explorer train classes offer music and traditional Peruvian food options, and the staff shares stories about Inca history along the way.

Buying Train Tickets: Tips and Options

Booking your train tickets in advance is mandatory, especially during peak tourist seasons from May to September.

Both train companies allow online bookings on their websites, where you can select your travel dates, choose classes, and view seat options. You’ll need to provide passport information, so have it ready when booking.

Three Ways to Book Your Peru Trains tickets:

• Online Booking: Check both operators’ websites for availability, prices, and special offers. Book early to lock in your preferred seats. Inca Rail Website | Peru Rail Website
• Tickets at the Train Station: While possible, it’s risky, as popular train classes often sell out. Avoid last-minute stress by booking online.
• Tour Packages: Some Cusco-based tour operators bundle train tickets with Machu Picchu entrance tickets and guided tours, which can be convenient and save time.

The ticket prices vary depending on the class you choose, as well as the time of the year that you are visiting.

For budget-conscious travelers, the Expedition or Voyager classes offer great views and comfort without breaking the bank.

The premium classes—PeruRail Vistadome, Inca Rail First Class, and Hiram Bingham—provide a more luxurious experience with meals, drinks, and entertainment included.

Getting to the Train Stations in Cusco

Cusco is your jumping-off point for Machu Picchu by train. It is a good idea to spend a few days in Cusco to acclimate to the high altitude before heading to Machu Picchu.

There are four train stations you can choose from to catch the Peru Trains to Machu Picchu. Not all of the train types will stop at the stations in the center of Cusco. The train schedules are constantly changing so refer to your booking engine to pick the right station for you.

Four Train Stations

Here are the four train stations that travel to Machu Picchu and the approximate trip times:

• Poroy Station: Located about 15 kilometers from Cusco, the train ride to Aguas Calientes takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The ride from downtown Cusco is about 30 minutes and you can call a car using the Grab app. This is the station I left from.
• Wánchaq Station: Located in the center of Cusco, the trip to Aguas Calientes takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes. You will need to take a bus from this station to Poroy to board the train.
• San Pedro Station (Machu Picchu Pueblo): Located in the center of Cusco, the trip to Aguas Calientes takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes.
• Ollantaytambo Station: Located 61 kilometers from Cusco, the trip to Aguas Calientes takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The Scenic Train Ride: What to Expect

The journey to Aguas Calientes is stunning. Imagine gliding through verdant valleys, with snow-capped mountains rising in the distance, even in the summer!

The train takes you deep into the Sacred Valley along the Urubamba River. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during the ride:

• Ride Duration: The train ride is anywhere from 3.5-4.5 hours long, it all depends on which train station you depart from.
• Food and Drinks: Snacks are served to the lower classes, while meals, drinks, and cocktails are included in premium options.
• Amenities: Both operators include comfortable seats, air conditioning, and restrooms. Some classes offer complimentary beverages and traditional snacks like corn and Andean potato chips.
• Views: Huge windows in all classes make for unobstructed views, while 360° and Vistadome classes feature panoramic glass panels.

Arrival in Aguas Calientes: What to Do Next

After a scenic train journey, you’ll arrive in Aguas Calientes, the small town nestled at the base of Machu Picchu.

The town center is just a quick 5- to 10-minute walk from the train station, making it easy to access hotels, restaurants, and shops right after you arrive.

However, be prepared as the entire town is up a steep hill. Ask your accommodations if they can send someone to the train station to help you with your bags. The roads are paved but on a steep incline.

Here’s what to do next to make the most of your time in Aguas Calientes before heading up to Machu Picchu!

Check Into Your Accommodations

If you’ve booked accommodation in Aguas Calientes, head to your hotel first. Many travelers arrive in the afternoon and use this time to settle in, drop off bags, and rest up before an early start to visit Machu Picchu the next day.

Grab a Bite to Eat

Aguas Calientes is full of restaurants, from casual eateries to Peruvian and international cuisine. It’s a great spot to refuel and enjoy local flavors, especially after a long train ride.

Here are some of my favorite restaurants and bars:

Green House – Fantastic organic restaurant overlooking the main road. Get the ceviche!

Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz – Huge plate of Peruvian classics, inside a multi-level restaurant with fun decor.

Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer – Live music and cold beer make this a perfect spot to enjoy a meal after your day at Machu Picchu. I even bought a T-shirt here just to remember my visit!

Buy Last-Minute Essentials

You’ll find shops selling water, snacks, and other essentials for your Machu Picchu trek. Grab any last-minute items here, like sunscreen, bug spray, or a rain poncho, as the weather can change quickly.

I was able to find cold medicine and altitude sickness pills easily. Most of the shops only take cash, however, so be prepared. I use the Charles Schwab debit card when I travel for no-fee cash withdrawals.

Visit the Hot Springs

If you have time, Aguas Calientes is known for its natural hot springs. These hot pools are a relaxing way to unwind after traveling. Keep in mind that they’re often busiest in the late afternoon and evening. They also only take cash at the front gate. Google Maps

Prepare for Your Machu Picchu Visit

Make sure you have your Machu Picchu entry ticket ready, as well as your bus ticket (if you plan to take the shuttle). Many travelers plan an early visit to avoid crowds and see the sunrise over Machu Picchu.

Keep in mind however that the earlier in the day that you go to this Unesco World Heritage site, the higher the risk of the ruins being covered in fog. I went at 11 am and the weather was clear and perfect. Check out my guide on the best time of the year to visit Machu Picchu.
