5 Awesome Places to Workout and Run in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, the vibrant capital of Malaysia, offers a unique blend of urban landscapes and lush green spaces, making it an ideal destination for fitness enthusiasts.

While the bustling city streets may present challenges for runners due to heavy traffic and limited sidewalks, Kuala Lumpur boasts a variety of parks and recreational areas that provide safe and scenic environments for exercise.

Whether you’re a local resident or a traveler seeking to maintain your fitness routine, exploring these green oases can offer a refreshing escape from the urban hustle.

In this guide, I’ll highlight some of the top spots in Kuala Lumpur where you can enjoy a fulfilling workout or run amidst the city’s dynamic backdrop.

The city streets are not very runner-friendly; sidewalks are scarce and there are a ton of cars on the roads. I found myself waiting at lights and dodging traffic during many of my outdoor runs.

However, Kuala Lumpur does have many parks for us runners to enjoy, if you do not feel comfortable running in the street.

In addition, there are a few gyms where you can use the treadmills indoors, lift weights to increase your pace, and take classes to build endurance. Check out this post here for what to pack before you head to KL.

Here are my top 5 ways on how you can work out and run in Kuala Lumpur.

1. Run with a View

The KLCC Park is one of my favorite places to run in Kuala Lumpur. The park not only boasts a 1.3 km rubber running track (pictured in the cover photo) and drinkable water stations to refill your water bottle, but you just can’t beat the views.

With every twist and turn you will see the Petronas Twin Towers in the distance. It truly is an iconic place to log your miles. In addition to KLCC, there are a few other public parks to run in, see this post here by Purely B for more suggestions.

2. Run Through a Synthentic Forest

If you are tired of the concrete jungle, escape to the Perdana Botanical Gardens and Bird Park. The Park is quite large, at 226 acres, so be prepared to log a lot of miles.

You can easily get lost, so make sure you have GPS on your phone so you can find your out. There are maps throughout the park as well to help guide you. The park is a beautiful place to break away from the craziness of the city streets.

3. Get Sweaty With the Locals

Feeling like getting down and dirty inside a local gym with not a single tourist around you? Then head to the Plaza Rakyat which is an unfinished building and light rail station that most locals consider an eyesore.

Hidden on the 4th floor is a gym with no air conditioning and older equipment, but for less than $5 USD you can get a good run-in on the treadmills and use the weights. Just because the equipment is older does not mean you still can’t get a good workout in. No excuses!

4. Run Comfortably in Luxury

When it’s time to get fancy, head over to the Sheraton Hotel Kuala Lumpur and buy a day pass for the Fitness Center located on the 3rd floor of this massive hotel. The gym is equipped with everything you can ask for from new machines, weights, cardio equipment, and foam rollers.

They also provide free water, towels, and apples. If you happen to be alone in the gym you can also plug in your music to play out loud on the treadmill speakers. Call for pricing as I was a guest there when I stayed but they do offer day passes for non-guests.

5. Workout with the Masses

What would a workout list be without at least one commercial gym on it? Anytime Fitness offers a free pass for first-time visitors and has several locations in KL. They are a modern gym with calibrated treadmills and all the amenities a large city gym would offer.

In addition, they offer HITT (High Intensity Interval Training) classes, so you can work on your endurance for your long run in Kuala Lumpur.  They are open 24 hours and 7 days a week. I went for the free day pass which was well worth it!

Final Thoughts

Running in Kuala Lumpur offers a unique experience, blending the city’s modern skyline with lush green parks and scenic trails.

While the city streets can be hectic, the numerous parks, lakes, and dedicated running paths provide plenty of options for both casual joggers and serious runners.

Whether you’re exploring the trails at KLCC Park, the expansive greenery of Perdana Botanical Gardens, or the more challenging routes around Bukit Kiara, there’s a running spot for everyone in Malaysia’s capital.

If you’re traveling to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore and looking for a convenient and budget-friendly way to get there, consider taking the bus.

It’s an affordable and comfortable journey that allows you to sit back and enjoy the changing landscapes along the way. For a detailed guide on what to expect and how to book your trip, check out this post on bus travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.

No matter how you arrive in KL, be sure to pack your running shoes and take advantage of the city’s beautiful running spots. It’s a great way to explore, stay active, and experience Kuala Lumpur from a different perspective!
